The House
We begin our tour at Wright's Home and Studio. In 1899, Wright married Catherine Tobin and wanted to build a house for his new family. Lacking sufficient funds of his own, Wright borrowed $5,000 from his employer Louis Sullivan to buy a lot and build his home. The original house was very small, so as his family grew Wright expanded the house with the playroom wing addition in 1895, and added the studio for his architectural practice in 1898.
Later Years
In 1911, Wright remodeled the studio into living quarters for his family and the original home was rented out to provide income for his family. Wright then left Oak Park and moved to his new home Taliesin in Spring Green, WI. In 1925, after all his children were grown, Wright sold the Home & Studio. It remained in private hands until 1974, when a group of Oak Park citizens formed the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation, and raised money to purchase the building, and then restore it to its appearance in 1909. Daily guided tours of the building are available; click here for details. Now we'll cross Forest Avenue and continue our tour.....
