Wright himself stated that the Tomek "plan was later elaborated into the plan of the Robie house" and there are a number of striking similarities between the two. Both houses have a first floor playroom, and the main living spaces on the second floor in an in-line plan. Both houses have living rooms with bands of windows on each side, and the dining room beyond the central fireplace; the traffic flow is along either side of the rooms, around the fireplace. Each also has a terrace with a daringly cantilevered roof, and large flat prairie style urns. And the bedrooms of both houses are located in a belvidere on the third floor.
In the differences between the two houses one can see how Wright has further refined the Tomek plan to transform it into the Robie house. The entrance to the Robie house is hidden at the rear of the house; in the Tomek house it is in plain view, one of the few Wright houses with such a direct entry. The Tomek house has casement windows along both sides of the living room; the Robie house has french doors along one side that lead to a shallow balcony.
The building has been little altered over the years; however unneccesary supporting posts were added to the living room terrace to provide a greater feeling of security, these bear none of the load of the cantilever.
