Edward Waller was an important early Wright patron. He lived in River Forest near the Wright's William Winslowe house in fact, Waller sold Winslowe the property upon which his home was built. Waller commissioned several projects to be designed by Wright: the Waller Aparments, Francisco Terrace Apartments (since demolished), and a remodelling of his house in River Forest. Waller's son Edward, Jr commissioned Midway Gardens.
The apartments have long been threatened with demolition because of neglect. In 1968 one of the unit was destroyed by fire and demolished. In recent years attempts have been made to restore the buildings.
