This is the first of several large
Kenilworth Avenue homes by the successful architectural firm of Patton &
Fisher. Mr. Douglass bought two lots for his house, the original lot size
was 149 feet wide by 330 feet deep. Portions of the original property
were sold off by the Lloyds, the second owners who purchased the house in 1957.
The house contains 18 finished rooms. There are 9 bedrooms and 6
bathrooms throughout. In 1915 a greenhouse was added to the south side of
the house, at the rear -- visible to the left in the picture above.
Typical Queen Anne features include the complex roofline, projecting
bays, turned spindles on the front porch and wide variety of surface textures.
The porch features Tuscan columns grouped in threes the port
cochere to the right was added later, in 1905. William Douglass lived in
this house until 1957, almost 65 years. Architect Norman Patton was also an Oak Park resident; his home is at 225 N. Grove, just a block to the east. |
