This large house is oriented toward the south and a large side lot.

B.P. Horton built this house on the site of a house his father, Henry Horton, built when he moved from Chicago to Oak Park in 1871.  The original house was built on a lot about half the size of the current property. The area to the south of the house originally was the site of the Van Platen home, built about 1894.  In 1939 the Van Platen house was in poor condition and B. P. Horton purchased it and had the house torn down, creating the park like setting seen today.

B.P. Horton worked as a textiles importer and also built homes which he rented out.  He had E. E. Roberts build houses on land he inherited from his father on Grove Street, just East of his home on Kenilworth.  He owned 7 houses in a row on Grove, from 301 to 323, as well as a 3 story apartment building at 310 N Grove.  By the time Horton built this house in 1912, he was all but retired, his income from real estate provided him with the income he needed and his primary business became real estate investment and management.

Horton lived in this house until his death in 1952. The current owners are 5th family to live in the house. They have extensively restored the house and landscaped the large side lot.

Thanks to Jim Varner for his research on this house.
