The house as built in the 1880s was a Queen Anne home very similar to the Rudolph Johns home right next door.  In 1924 the current owner, Mrs. Mary Herron, commissioned Tallmadge and Watson to remodel her home; all traces of the original structure were subsumed in their design, giving it the appearance of a medieval English cottage.

It appears that Frank Lloyd Wright prepared some designs for this remodeling which were not used.  Mrs Herron was likely familiar with Mr Wright's work since she was a sister of Nathan Moore, who lived in the Wright designed house at 333 Forest.
