The first house completed of the homes for
the two Dunlop brothers, this home shows Robert's easy adaptability to the
wishes of his clients, advertising himself as an architect of "homey
dwellings." This house and the home next door for Joseph's brother
Simpson have virtually identical floor plans, but the homes have different
exterior details (porch details, exterior cladding and window arrangements)
that serve to differentiate them on the exterior. This was one of Roberts
techniques for producing such an extensive body of Oak Park designs; he was the
most prolific of all Oak Park architects, completing over 200
buildings. Like his brother Simpson, Joseph Dunlop did not live to enjoy his beautiful house for very long. He died in 1901 at the age of 42. |
