This 100 by 150 foot parcel of the Kennedy estate on Kenilworth Avenue was the first portion to be sold off, in 1909. Village building permits show a building permit issued July 8, 1909, to Mrs. Carpenter, who was the widow of Edward P. Carpenter. The house was built as a 2-flat, with 2 separate entrances, but resembles a single family home from the street. Oak Park phone directories dated 1910-1911 also show Mrs. Carpenter residing here. The house has certain stylistic similarities with the work of E. E. Roberts, who at this time built other 2-flats that resembled single family homes. However, research thus far has not allowed us to confirm this. Thanks to Peg Zak for her research on this house, and to the homeowner for her interest in the history of her residence. |
