The Brown house is constructed of concrete blocks, with mahogany trim inside. The living rooms overlooks nearby Lorenz Lake; the roofline facing the street is at ground level (see above). The plan is in-line, and the unit module is a 4 foot square. Shortly after construction, a maid's room and additional bedroom were added at the end of the gallery.
Parkwyn Village was formed by a group of friends, many of whom were employed by the Upjohn company in Kalamazoo. They visited Wright at Taliesin and asked him to design houses for them. The group then split, with some choosing to build in Galesburg, about 10 miles from Kalamazoo, resulting in the Galesburg Country Homes, and the rest deciding to build in Kalamazoo, forming Parkwyn Village.
Parkwyn Village was built on a 47 acre orchard. Wright laid out the lots as circles, with the areas between them serving as common areas. The homeowners pooled their resources so that they could buy materials in bulk, made their own concrete blocks, and did some of the work of building the homes themselves. Several houses were designed by Wright for the community, however only 4 were built.
