Original Owner: S. P. Elam
Address: 309 21st St SW, Austin
Year Built 1951

This is one of the largest of the Usonian houses; from the street it appear even larger than it actually is.

The Elams were taking a tour of Taliesin and mentioned that they wanted to build.  John Howe suggested that they see Mr. Wright, who met with them immediately. They later had a falling out with their architect and had to finish their kitchen without his design.

The main floor of this house is 148 feet long, with a 4 foot square module. At either end is a large triangular space; a living room on the left and a children's playroom on the right.  In between are the master bedroom and two children's bedrooms.  On the small first (entry level) floor are servant's quarters, a guestroom and a workshop.  A three car garage is at the far left.

The house has cypress board and batten siding and cedar shakes cover the roof.  The massive piers that support the dramatic cantilevers and soaring roofs are constructed of limestone dug from a quarry near Taliesin.
