In 1903, Frank Lloyd Wright designed an Oak Park home for William E. Martin. This commision led Wright on the path to design a series of buildings in Buffalo, New York that were of immense importance to Wright's career.

Martin's brother, Darwin D. Martin, visited Chicago and saw his brother's new house.  He was captivated by Wright's style.  Martin was president of the Larkin company, a Buffalo business selling soaps and grocery staples, often through the mail.  Martin was soon in touch with Wright and not long afterwards hired Wright to build his new house in Buffalo.  Wright also built homes for other of the Larkin company executives, a office building for the Larkin company, a factory in Chicago for another business venture of the Martin brothers, and in the twenties, a summer residence for the Martins in nearby Derby.
