This unusual house is built in the center of a block, not far from the Wisconsin state capital building. Lamp was a close boyhood friend of Wright; Wright tells of the bond between them in his Autobiography. The third floor was originally just an open roof terrace; it was enclosed and the brick painted white not long after the original construction. Wright also built a cottage for Lamp on an island in Lake Mendota called Rocky Roost. The cottage was destroyed by fire c. 1934, and the entire island is now submerged in the lake.
