Arthur L. Richard was a Milwaukee builder. He worked with Wright to design the American Systems Ready-Cut structures. These were one and two story houses and apartments designed as "pre-fabricated" units. The lumber was pre-cut and numbered and then assembled at the site; the idea being to reduce the total cost. The entire 2700 block of Burnham street was built as a demonstration of several types of these homes, of which these duplex aparments are a part. See also the Richards bungalow and small house.
The four duplex aparments here each have a separate upper and lower apartment. They were each built from the same Wright design. The four units are in various states of restoration one has been given protective vinyl siding. In 1990 Milwaukee approved the creation of a historic district for these duplexes and the neighboring Richards houses.
