Wright's home for Herbert F. ("Hib") Johnson, built in 1937-1939 in Wind Point, WI, and known as "Wingspread", grew out of the commission for the Johnson Wax Administration building in Racine, WI. Johnson was the president of the Johnson Wax company, and also commissioned Wright to design a home for him.
The home is designed with four spreading wings around a central core; the core served as a large family gathering and entertainment area, with separate zones functioning as entrance hall, family living area, dining, and library spaces. The four speading wings also each had their own functions one served as the bedroom area for Johnson and his wife, one for the children, a guest wing with garage space, and a wing for the kitchen and servant's living quarters. The wings each attach to the central core at its corners, giving the plan a pinwheel shape.
The building today serves as the headquarters for the Johnson Foundation, which uses the site to host educational conferances. The building, however, is open to the public for self-guided tours on days that no conferences are scheduled. You must call ahead to make an appointment and determine if the building is open to the public on the day you wish to visit. The phone number is: 262-681-3353.
